Today, we worked on an interesting job in East Memphis, TN 38120, where the client had lost the key to their HON lateral file cabinet. The lock had a 138R code stamped on the front of the cam lock. As professional locksmiths, we use these codes to retrieve the exact key cuts needed to craft a new key.
We started by cutting a new key based on the 138R code, but unfortunately, the key still didn’t work. After inspecting the lock, we discovered that the internal wafers were worn and stiff from years of neglect. This isn’t uncommon with older locks, especially when they haven’t been serviced regularly.
To resolve the issue, we removed the old cam lock, a process that required careful disassembly of the cabinet to avoid any damage. Once the lock was out, we replaced it with a new cam lock and used our skills to craft a new key for the client. Cutting keys by code can be tricky when locks are old or worn, which is why it’s important to have the expertise to manually decode the lock by sight-reading the wafers and using key impressioning tools.
Some of the tools we used for this job included:
- Lock picks to gain non-destructive entry
- Files and key blanks to fine-tune the key after replacement
- Dremels for cleaning and polishing the lock parts
- Key extraction tools to deal with worn wafers and ensure the new key worked smoothly
