One of the most interesting projects we completed recently was for a client in East Memphis, TN, 38111. They own a commercial property and needed emergency commercial locksmith assistance when their Corbin Russwin panic bar suddenly malfunctioned. This panic hardware is critical for safety and security in commercial settings, particularly for buildings with high traffic. The client reached out with an urgent request, “Do locksmiths service and install push bars?” We were happy to assure them that, “yes, GI Locksmith provides expert installation and repairs for exit devices, crash bars, and panic bars on commercial doors.”
The client explained that their rim exit device had fallen off the door. A patron had been exiting the building when the crash bar gave way, dropping to the floor. Unfortunately, this occurred right as the business was preparing to close, leaving the building vulnerable because the doors could not be locked properly. They needed an emergency commercial locksmith near them immediately.
Understanding the urgency, we arrived within 20-30 minutes, fully equipped and ready to resolve the issue. We quickly assessed the situation, noting that the rim exit device, a Corbin Russwin panic bar, needed to be reinstalled carefully. Alignment was key. If the doors weren’t aligned perfectly, the deadlatch wouldn’t work properly, and people could still be trapped inside during an emergency. Our team used precision tools like a leveler, measuring tape, and drill bits to ensure that the panic bar was mounted perfectly on the aluminum door.
We also addressed another critical issue: the latch on the strike side wasn’t aligned properly, meaning that even if the panic bar worked, the door wouldn’t lock securely. We adjusted the trim around the latch and made sure the deadlatch mechanism worked flawlessly.
As a bonus, this Corbin Russwin panic bar had a dogging feature, allowing it to remain open during high-traffic periods. The client was thrilled to learn that this feature was fully operational again, easing the strain on their panic hardware during busy times.
While on-site, we also took care of rekeying the Medeco lock that was installed on the rim exit device. This high-security Medeco lock, paired with a rekeyed rim cylinder, ensured that the building was fully secure.
As we were wrapping up, one of the security guards noticed that another door wasn’t functioning correctly. The deadlatch was catching on the door trim and jamb, preventing the door from opening smoothly. We jumped in to fix this as well, adjusting the strike plate and aligning the door for smooth operation.
The client was extremely satisfied, not only with how we solved their emergency quickly but also how we went the extra mile to address their other door hardware issues. We took several before-and-after photos, as well as video footage showing the process, from the initial installation to the rekeying and alignment fixes. You can see the photos and videos below, demonstrating the stability and functionality of the new push bar door lock setup.
