Today, we had the opportunity to assist a new homeowner in Millington, TN, 38053, with their beautiful property. They had recently installed stunning double front entry doors made of iron and an iron security door for added protection. These metal exterior doors not only added security but also elevated the aesthetics of the home. After the recent arrival of their newborn, the client noticed an issue with their home security: their in-laws had made unauthorized copies of their keys during a hospital visit. Naturally, this caused concern for their privacy, and they reached out to us for help.
They asked us, “Can you rekey custom door locks?” to which we responded, “Yes, GI Locksmith can rekey all types of locks, from Schlage rim cylinders and Kwikset door knobs to security door locks and storm door locks.” They had a combination of Kwikset door knobs on their patio doors, Schlage deadbolts on their iron doors, and a double entry storm door with Schlage rim cylinders. They also asked, “Can locksmiths make all the keys match to the same key?” and we explained, “As long as the locks are the same brand, we can absolutely make all the keys match.”
When we arrived, the first task was to work on the storm door locks. These metal front doors were fitted with Schlage rim cylinders, commonly used on commercial door hardware. The storm doors that lock with Schlage cylinders were ready for rekeying. The other patio and garage doors featured Kwikset door knobs and Kwikset deadbolts, which also needed rekeying.
To simplify things, we offered to either rekey the existing locks so that each brand had one key, or we could change the security door locks on the iron doors to Kwikset cylinders, allowing all doors in the house to be keyed alike. The client loved the idea of having just one key for the double front entry doors, patio doors, and garage door.
Next, we rekeyed the Kwikset door knobs and Schlage deadbolts to match their respective keys. We also fixed the door knob and storm door locks that had worn down from years of use. These iron doors were beautiful but required a bit of care to ensure the door hardware was functioning perfectly.
One additional challenge was the garage door. The client realized their keys didn’t match, leaving them locked out of their garage. We quickly picked the lock, disassembled the door hardware, and rekeyed it to match the rest of the Kwikset locks. Now, the entire home—iron front doors, metal exterior doors, and even the garage—could be accessed with just one key for each brand.
