Today, we had an exciting project for a National Service Provider (NSP) working with a client in Memphis, TN, 38114. They reached out in urgent need of an emergency commercial locksmith to handle a couple of time-sensitive tasks for their commercial building. The primary requirement was to install indicator locks on their front entry doors and privacy locks with occupancy indicators for their restrooms locks. This installation was prompted by the latest 2024 building code, which mandates that locked exit doors must feature indicator locks to improve safety and accessibility, and bathroom doors in commercial spaces must also have occupancy indicators.
We headed straight to the location, prepared with all the tools and expertise needed to install the locks. Since it was a commercial property, the client wanted high-quality Schlage mortise locks for the main entrance and privacy lock with occupancy indicators for the restrooms. The new code ensures people can quickly identify if a room or space is locked or occupied, providing an extra layer of security and convenience.
Fresh Indicator Lock Installations for Commercial Doors
We kicked things off by installing commercial indicator locks on the front entry doors. These locks allow for visual confirmation from the outside, showing if the door is locked or unlocked. We used a special installation technique that saved time and avoided drilling unnecessary holes, using a hole saw for precision.
Throughout the process, we followed a step-by-step approach:
- We measured the backset and center of the lock housing.
- After marking the spots for the screws, we drilled carefully, ensuring the installation was straight and professional.
- Next, we installed the open-locked indicator and ensured it functioned correctly. When the bolt was extended, the indicator clearly displayed “locked.” When retracted, it showed “unlocked,” and we tested it multiple times to ensure smooth operation.
We have shared photos below that show the progression—from the lock in its initial position, to the locked and unlocked indicator phases. You can also see how we marked the measurements and drilled holes accurately to make the installation look seamless and professional.
Rekeying Commercial Locks for a New Owner
Once the indicator locks were in place, the NSP client requested a complete rekeying of all the locks in the building as they prepared for a new owner. Rekeying commercial properties is a crucial part of ensuring security and control over who has access. The existing system included a variety of locks, including Schlage mortise locks, Schlage deadbolts, and key-in-knob (KIK) cylinders.
We rekeyed the double entry doors and other access points across the property, ensuring each had a fresh key system. This service ensures that previous employees or workers who might still have old keys are no longer able to access the building. We made sure the process was smooth, ensuring the client had new master keys for all areas, providing both security and convenience.
Bathroom Lock Installation: Privacy Locks with Occupancy Indicators
The bathrooms in the building also required new locks per the latest safety guidelines. We installed privacy locks with occupancy indicators to ensure that anyone approaching the restroom can easily identify if it’s in use. These locks feature a small window that shows either “vacant” or “occupied,” which is a simple but effective way to improve user experience and safety in commercial buildings.
Using the same precision techniques as before, we installed the bathroom locks, ensuring everything was aligned correctly and worked flawlessly. You’ll see pictures of the bathroom door lock with indicator, showing both the locked and unlocked positions. This part of the project is essential for compliance with building codes and enhances the overall user experience in commercial settings.
High-Quality Brands for Commercial Locks
The brands we worked with on this project include some of the most trusted names in commercial security:
- Schlage locks: Known for their durability and reliability in commercial settings, we used Schlage locksets for the main entry doors.
- Sargent locks: A popular choice for high-security needs, Sargent locks were installed in areas that required an extra level of protection.
- Falcon locks and Arrow locks: These brands were also included, particularly in the key-in-knob systems we rekeyed.
The combination of these trusted brands, alongside our experience in installing and rekeying commercial lock systems, allowed us to provide top-notch service and security to the client.
Custom Techniques and Tools
For this job, we relied on several key tools and techniques to ensure the work was done efficiently and professionally:
- 18-volt drill: Used for precision drilling.
- Dewalt Pack out system: Packed with essential storefront parts, such as cover plates, screws, and GKL products.
- Hole saw: Used to make precise cuts for the indicator locks.
- HSS high-speed steel drill bits: For pre-drilling and tapping threads for the mounting holes.
You can check out the before and after pictures below to see the installation in action. The completed project showcases not only the functionality of the new locks but also their sleek, modern appearance that enhances the building’s security and aesthetics. The National service provider (NSP) wanted us to install a realtor lock box to put the keys in and set the code to their preference.
