Today, we received a call from a client living in an apartment complex in Memphis, TN, 38104 in Midtown. They were locked out of their mailbox and couldn’t retrieve essential documents they’d been expecting. The mailbox was secured with a certified USPS mailbox lock, and as the only locksmith in the area equipped with USPS-certified cam locks for mailbox replacement, we knew we could assist right away.
Our first step was to assess the lock on-site. Architectural mailboxes, whether inside lobbies or mounted outdoors, are designed for security and durability, but that also makes lockouts challenging when keys are lost. We often work on cam locks for a range of uses, from mailbox locks to toolbox locks, storage units, and even furniture locks, dispensing machines, coin machine locks and more! This client’s lock didn’t have a code on the front for key cutting, so our usual “key by code” option wasn’t available. Fortunately, we have several methods to approach cam lock access and replacement, even when codes are absent.
We started by carefully picking the lock, getting it open without causing damage to the mailbox or the cam lock itself. Once inside, we attempted key impressioning to create a duplicate key from the existing lock, which is sometimes possible with lightly worn locks. However, due to the wear, we decided a replacement lock would be the best solution. With the client’s approval, we went ahead and installed a brand-new, USPS-certified cam lock, giving them a completely functional and secure mailbox once again.
Our team comes prepared with a wide range of certified tools for cam lock replacements, so we carry CompX USPS-certified cam locks on our truck, ensuring we’re ready for situations just like this. This particular lock also met ANSI/BHMA certification standards, meaning it offers both the durability and security required by commercial buildings and residential properties alike.
In this case, we installed the replacement cam lock using our specialized wafer pinning kit, lock picks, and impressioning tools. With these tools, we provided a smooth and quick installation that maintained the integrity of the mailbox. Now, the client’s mailbox lock is brand new and secure, and the entire process has been captured in a before-and-after video. In the images below, you can see the initial condition of the lock, the replacement process, and the final secure installation.
Throughout the visit, the client asked about other ways we can help in the future. They were delighted to learn that we also provide services for apartment complexes, including rekeying for cam locks, repairing mailbox latches, and offering emergency locksmith services. They were especially interested in learning how we assist property managers with security issues for tenants, particularly when lost keys and mailbox lockouts occur. We can even do a master key for cam locks and master key system.
